Cedar Rapids, IA—June 9, 2017–  A large crowd turned out once again for 100.7 “The Fox” Free Night at the Races, an annual tradition at Cedar Rapids’ historic Hawkeye Downs Speedway. Fans were treated to some great racing in the Hy-Vee Racing Series on a hot late spring evening.

The Waterloo Auto Parts American Iron Racing Series (A.I.R.S.) was on hand for the first of two appearances this season with Craig Stepanek showing the way in collecting the 12-lap feature for that division of vintage cars. Stepanek, who is no stranger to Hawkeye Downs, took command of the race about three laps in and m motored away from the field. Finishing behind him were Tim Arp and Brian Gade.

Brad Chandler picked up his second feature win of the season in Miller Time Hornets after an early spin sent the leader, Mike Coulbourn, into the grass. Chandler outran Derek Parrott to the stripe in the closely contested feature. Dallas Chandler crossed the stripe in third. Point leader Drew Nickell finished fourth, and Lucas Foster finished fifth.

The Anderson Automotive Hobby Stocks feature saw tight racing though the pack with Quinn O’Brien leading the majority of the laps until a late caution gave co-point leader Jim Hanson an opening and he wrestled the lead away from O’Brien. Kurt Bohnsack, who was tied with Hanson coming into the evening finished second and waging a furious side-by-side battle with Hanson. Gerald Hall was in the thick of it as well, finishing third. O’Brien finished fourth and Jeremy Floyd scored fifth.

Cole O’Brien outran the Dublin City Pub INEX Legends field after starting outside the first row. Point leader Sammy Smith chased him much of the race and closed the gap over the final five laps but couldn’t draw close enough for a challenge. Austin Slabaugh finished in third behind Smith with Dave McCalla and Todd Ness filling out the top five.

In Mountain Dew Sportsmen, CJ VanHorn picked up his first feature win of the season after starting in row two. Most of the action was in his rear-view mirror as Greg Hentrich and point leader Cory Houdek gave chase along with Brandon Herb. John Johnston finished fifth.

Van Horn’s feature win broke Cory Houdek’s four-win streak coming into the night.

Finally, the Performance Concepts Big 8 Late Model feature saw Brian Gibson emerge from an early battle with Brad Osborn to score his first trip to Victory Circle this season. Osborn bobbled a bit on lap three opening the door for Gibson to take the point.

Gibson built a fairly comfortable lead while Griffin McGrath slipped around Osborn to take second.  With eleven laps to go caution waved as Chad Siems spun in turn three. Gibson was able to pull away again on the restart although McGrath did close the gap a bit over the final laps. Osborn maintained third with Mark Ironside finishing fourth and Mark Greb fifth.

Two drivers at the front of the point chart, Caleb Adrian and Brody Willett, did not race Friday night.

Another big night of racing is on tap Friday, June 16 with Racin’ and Rockin’ to support the Military, presented by Cassill Motors. The evening will be filled with racing, bands, special activities and much, much more. Current NASCAR driver and Hawkeye Downs Speedway alum, Landon Cassill will be racing as well.
