Lemke, Larson Franzen Among Winners At “All Star Night” Maquoketa Speedway
Maquoketa, Iowa: The Darkside Promotions “All Star Night” welcomed over 100 race cars on a warm Mid-April evening on Saturday night. The race hungry fans were treated to an exciting night of racing.
The IMCA Modifieds saw Freeport, Illinois un-retired driver, Scott Lemke pick up the opening night win. Lemke was a fixture at the tri-state tracks back in the late 90’s and early 2000’s before sitting out for 16 years. The veteran showed he still is to be reckoned with as he led all 30 laps in route to the win. Jeff”Bone” Larson applied pressure to Lemke in the early going and it appeared the that the friends were going to provide a thrilling race but Larson was sidelined due to a tire failure as the race passed the midway point. Dan Roedl and Drew Janssen applied the heat to Lemke in the latter half of the main. At eh checkers it was Lemke scoring the win ahead of Roedl and Janssen.
Jeff “Bone” Larson was given the opportunity to drive Lee Kinsella’s IMCA Stock Car on Saturday night and Larson did give the 21 car a ride. Gage Neal led the main early from the pole before Larson and 3rd starting and defending track champion Jacob Ellithorpe made it a three car battle for the lead. Also advancing to join the lead pack was 9th starting Rod Snellenberger. Very late in the race the leaders came on lapped traffic and Ellithorpe was leading but got pinched behind slower traffic allowing Larson to take the top spot and go on to record the win. Snellenberger nipped Ellithorpe for second at the line.
A strong field of IMCA Sportmods were on hand Saturday night. Shane Paris drew the pole and appeared to be the man to beat but hometown-er Jarrett Franzen had other ideas. Franzen was able to wrestle the lead away from Paris and go on to score the 20 lap feature win ahead of third row starter Ryan Walker. Paris crossed the finish line in third.
Veteran Buffalo, Iowa driver Randy LaMar scored the Hobby Stock feature win. Lamar started tenth on the grid but worked to the front quickly taking the lead from Daniel Wauters. LaMar led a pack of cars to the finish line with Scott Wetter finishing second just ahead of Jordan Miles.
20 drivers took the green in the Legends Direct INEX Legends main event. Jackson Lewis of Lakeville, MN led the main event for the majority of the race ahead of his car owner Griffin McGrath. The Legends continue to provide good racing with an impressive group of drivers at the Maquoketa Speedway. Cole O’Brien advanced all the way from the 11th starting spot to take third on Saturday night.
A strong 16 car field took the green flag for the 4 Stocks main event. Josh Starr took advantage of his pole position draw and led all 12 laps. Starr’s win was anything but easy as Jacob Welter applied early pressure before 7th starter Cyle Hawkins moved into contention. Hawkins took second right on the rear bumper of Starr and Welter held on for third.
Rounding out the program were the 2 Man Cruisers. The team of Cory VanDerWilt and Brett Maasdam scored the win ahead of the wicked looking machine driven by Jerome and Preston Kline. Maasdam and VanDerWilt collected their beautiful 6 foot trophies in victory lane.
Saturday, April 20th will be the 2024 Season Opener at the Maquoketa Speedway as the drivers will earn their valuable IMCA points. The IMCA Late Models will make their season debut on Saturday night along with all the support classes. Hot laps will take to the quick ¼ mile at 6 pm with racing to follow.
