MoTown Beats Out Mother Nature on Johnny Ray’s Sports Bar & Grille Night

Marshalltown, Iowa (August 22nd, 2014) – Racing was hot and heavy on Johnny Ray’s Sports Bar & Grille Night even though mother nature tried to take the night away. Mother nature failed as the final checkered flag was displayed just before the heavy rain came.

Bryan Zehm jumped out to the lead in the Mod Lites 15 lap feature event. Zehm pulled away only to see the caution come out on lap three for Steven Kennedy spinning in turn two. Zehm got a great restart and began to pulled away again only to see the caution come out again on lap nine. Zehm was not to be denied as he took the win over Josh May, Jimmy May, Charlie Brown and Joe Glick.

Up next was the 12 lap IMCA Hobby Stocks feature event and it was Gary Pfantz grabbing the early lead. Pfantz continued to lead until the caution came out on lap six for Travis Merical in turn four. Pfantz saw tenth place starter Jamie Schirm and Garrett Eilander on his back bumper. It was Schirm grabbing the lead by the exit of turn two on the restart. Schirm went on to take the victory meanwhile Eilander took second away from Pfantz. John Watson came home fourth and Travis Staley was fifth.

The Big 8 Tyre Center IMCA Northern SportMods 18 lap feature saw Tom Rawlins and Ryan Ashton lead the field to green flag and it was Ashton grabbing the lead. The caution came out on lap four when Rawlins slid off the top side of turn three. Ashton saw Matt Lettow and Jayme Duinink right behind it him and it was Lettow taking the lead away on lap seven. Shortly after the caution came out on lap eight when Neil Follett, Glenn Gladson and Adam Shelman got together in turn two. Lettow got a great restart but then the caution came out again on lap 12. On this restart, Letttow had to contend with Clint Luellen. Luellen grabbed the lead away and although there was a pair of cautions on lap 15 it was Luellen taking seventh win in weekly competiton at Motown in 2014. Lettow settled into second. Jenae Gustin was third meanwhile Johnathan Logue and Sam Wieben was fourth and fifth respectively.

Don Vis lead the opening lap in the IMCA Stock Cars 18 lap feature event and shortly after one lap was scored they were all battling out and came out of turn five wide unfourtnately nobody wanted to give that sent Robbie Merkle off the top of turn two bring out the caution. Vis held on to the lead on lap two but it was Donavon Smith, who worked his way through the field from 11th starting spot to the lead on lap three. Smith saw the caution come out twice on lap four but went racing resumed he pulled away underterred by the challenges from Damon Murty. Steve Meyer, Robert Stofer and Michael Jaennette rounded out the top five.

IMCA Modifieds feature was the final feature of the night and went green-to-checkered caution free. The field went three wide on lap one but it was Rookie Jake Strayer grabbing the top spot. Strayer held on to the lead until Richie Gustin worked his way from ninth to second. Gustin took the lead away on lap six and went on to take his fourth win of the season at Motown. Last Week’s winner Racer Hulin was second, Jon Snyder was third, Strayer came home fourth and Ronn Lauritzen was fifth.

Speedway Roars back to life on Wednesday Night as the Stars from the United States Modified Touring Series will run a Casey’s Hunt Race along with the Iron Man Challenge series for USRA Stock Cars and USRA B-Mods. Hot Laps at 7pm and Racing to Follow.

Then on Friday Night, it will be the North 3rd Ave Dairy Queen Larry Wollam Season Championship Night. It will be the final night for track points. Top 12 in points will be locked into the feature, all other cars will run a last chance race for starting position. Also making a return visit to the quarter mile will be the flat track quads. Hot Laps at 7pm and Racing at 7:30pm.
