Maquoketa, Iowa (June 15, 2024) – Saturday night the Maquoketa Speedway held a very special night of racing as the 4th annual Del Gade Memorial race was held. The American Iron Racing Series is the brainchild of the late Del Gade and his son Brian of Clarence, Iowa. The AIRS Series was started with a group of guys getting together in 2015 and putting the ideas in motion to form a class of race of cars that would be all American made cars that would be affordable and offer a chance to race at different tracks showcasing cars from days gone by. The first race was held in May of 2016 and has since grown into a very popular attraction. The annual “Del” drew nearly 30 cars to the Maquoketa Speedway on Saturday night and a special race night was held and the outcome could not have been scripted any better. Five heat races were held in the AIRS class with the field being split into two main events. The first feature was for drivers that who had not yet earned a feature win this season. Del Gade’s granddaughter set the pace for the field which also included Del’s daughter. When the checkers waved on the first 15 lap feature it was the Granddaughter Emily Meyer taking the win just ahead of her Aunt Lisa Miller. This was not a race that was gifted to Emily as she had to hold off Lisa Miller lap after lap and on a couple of occasions Lisa actually bumped her niece to let her know she was there and was not giving her the win. Emily held her line and hit her marks lap after lap in taking a win by less than a car length. Lisa Miller took second ahead of Connor Quigley.

The second AIRS feature, which included drivers who had visited victory lane recently, put on a great show with plenty of wheel to wheel action. Mallet Meyer, (Emily’s Husband) advanced from his 3rd position start and took the lead early from pole sitter Bruce Yoerger. Meyer drove his 1958 Ford Fairlane to the 15 lap feature win making a clean sweep for the Meyer household. Meyer had to hold off his Uncle Bart Miller in getting to the checkers first. Miller was able to catch Meyer but Meyer protected the low line in scoring the win. Meyer stated in victory lane, “Emily told me to not leave the low line, you know the wife is always right.” Emily was right and the two big trophies for the “Del Gade Memorial” went back to Clarence to the Meyer house.

The IMCA Modified feature saw defending Maquoketa Speedway track champion, Jeff (Bone) Larson add another feature win to his 2024 resume. Larson shot to the top of the track from his third row start and quickly worked to the front. Larson was able to get by early race leader Mark Schulte as the race closed in on the halfway mark. Charlie Mohr also found the high side to his liking advancing from a 4th row start to move into second late in the race. Mohr was able to close on Larson but was not able to pose a serious threat to he leader. Mohr crossed under the checkers in second ahead of Schulte.

The Amhof Trucking IMCA Sportmods main event saw 22 drivers take the green for their main event. Tyler Soppe jumped out front from the outside front row start and sailed on to the feature win. The field was bunched up a couple of times late due to minor spins but Soppe proved to be up to all challengers in scoring the win. Austin Stamm advanced from a seventh position start to take second ahead of Corey Kuntzelman.

The QC Jeeps.com IMCA Stock Cars put on their usual hotly contested feature race with plenty of door to door racing. For the first time, Farley Iowa driver Kyle Merkes raced to the win in the very tough Stock Car class. Merkes raced into the lead getting by Pole sitter Andrew Chelf. Merkes held the point the remainder of the race taking the win ahead of Joe Bonney and Leah Wroten.

The final race of the night was the Hobby Stock main and the feature could very well have been the race of the night as many as five drivers had a shot at the win on the final lap. The lead pack swelled to five as the race went on with the lead being swapped several times. Sheldon Hunter was able to get to the checkers first just ahead of Lane Vohringer and Jordan Miles.
The INEX Legends also saw a first time winner make his way to the Maquoketa Speedway victory lane. Young Dylan Manning took the feature win by holding off Craig Peekenschneider and Cole O’Brien.

Saturday, June 22nd will be Arnolds Motor Supply night at the races with concession specials, $2 hot dogs and $2 beers. The IMCA Late Models will be back in action along with all other weekly classes. Hot laps will take to the track at 6 pm with racing to follow.
