Murphy, Aikey, Eckrich take Deery point battle to Dubuque on Sunday

DUBUQUE, Iowa (July 13) – The point race was just getting started when the Deery Brothers Summer Series made its first visit this season to Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedway.

Seven races and nearly two months later, points and feature finishes are getting even more scrutiny as the IMCA Late Model tour returns for a Sunday, July 15 show.

Mike Murphy Jr. of Colona, Ill., continues to top the standings but six-time series champion Jeff Aikey of Waterloo now lurks in second, just four points off the pace. Andy Eckrich of Oxford is 12 points out of first.

Two-time defending series champion Ray Guss Jr. of Milan, Ill., is tied for fourth points-wise with West Burlington’s Jay Johnson and has won the last two events, at West Liberty Raceway and I-35 Speedway. He’ll be looking to win three straight for the first time in his distinguished career when the green flag flies at Dubuque.

Sunday’s main event pays $2,000 to win and a minimum of $250 to start.

Spectator admission is $16 for adults, $13 for seniors, $10 for students and free for kids 12 and under. Pit passes are $25. Gates open at 4:30 p.m., the grandstand opens at 5:30 p.m. and racing follows 6:30 p.m. hot laps.

Darrel DeFrance of Marshalltown, who has now competed at all 396 events in series history, was the winner of the April 22 feature at Dubuque.

The 14th of 20 events on the 2012 Deery schedule is Wednesday, July 18 at Quad City Speedway’s Hershel Roberts Memorial.

Pit gates open at 4:30 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 5 p.m. Hot laps are at 6:30 p.m. and qualifying for the $2,000 to win main event starts at 7 p.m.
