Noteboom’s Marshalltown win sets up dramatic finish for JR Motorsports Hawkeye Dirt Tour
MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (Sept. 21) – You can’t ask for a better finish than this.
Jay Noteboom held off Darin Duffy to win Friday’s JR Motorsports Hawkeye Dirt Tour feature at Marshalltown Speedway. Jeremy Mills ran seventh, so he and Noteboom will be tied for the point lead going into the final event of the IMCA Modified series on Saturday, at the same venue.
A single caution slowed the opening night 30-lapper, on the 10th circuit. Duffy started outside row one and held off defending tour champion Mark Elliott to lead past midway.
Noteboom came from seventh on the original grid to challenge, then took the lead on lap 17. The front pair went side-by-side for the front spot, with Duffy scored first across the stripe on laps 20 and 22.
Working the bottom line, Duffy had the slight edge coming out of the second turn on the final circuit, but Noteboom, running the extreme high side of the oval most of the way, forged ahead again and took the checkers by two car lengths.
Jon Snyder started 10th and finished third; Elliott was fourth and Randy Havlik completed the top five. Hard charger Jimmy Gustin advanced 11 spots to finish sixth.
Noteboom’s win, his third in 12 series events this season, was good for $1,000. His Sept. 15 Hawkeye Dirt Tour win at Farley already had Noteboom on the ballot for the 2013 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational.
Mills had gone into the race with a six point lead over Noteboom. Elliott is now nine points out of first.
Pit gates open at 4:30 p.m. for night two of Marshalltown’s Havoc On the High Banks special. The grandstand opens at 5 p.m., hot laps are at 6:30 p.m. and racing starts at 7 p.m.
