Peeler, Clancy, Houseman Jr., Wright, Ainsworth and Masoner Earn Wins on Wild Second Night of Racing
By: Jacob Blair
Bethany, Missouri (April 19, 2019) – After a one-week break, US 36 Raceway readied for the second night of racing action in 2019 and for the second week of the season, the IMCA Modifieds provided one of the best races of the night. Brandon Williams took a front row starting position and led the first 15 laps of the feature. That statement is a little misleading because Chad Clancy was draped all over the inside corner panel of Williams’ machine for most of the run. Clancy searched all over the racetrack for a line with enough grip to make the move.
While those two battled, Steven Bowers Jr. closed in and made it a three-car battle. The three drivers were primed for a battle to the end, when the first caution of the race flew at lap 15. Clancy choose the inside lane on the Delaware double file restart. Bowers got the top and, on the restart, he found the grip, shot around Clancy and crossed to the inside of Williams. He cleared for the lead in turn three as Williams slipped up allowing Clancy into second.
Bowers was set to pick up his second win of the season at US 36, as he took the white flag with a healthy gap. Although into turn one, it looked as though Bowers car lost power and spun slowly, eventually coming to a halt in the middle of turn one. The caution flew, setting up a green white checkered with Clancy out front. He would manage the restart and make his way to Westfall GMC Victory Lane. Cory Wray made a late run to finish second, Clay Hale finished third, Kyle Henning fourth and Tyler Hibner fifth.
Mike Houseman Jr. dominated the IMCA Sprint Car action for the night. After winning his heat, posting sub-13-second lap times, Houseman made a quick move to the lead in the feature and said a quick goodbye to the rest of the field. Mike Moore gave Houseman some pressure early before fading late in the race. Houseman won the race over Moore. Matt Richards backed up his win from two weeks ago with a third-place finish, while Jack Potter finished fourth and Kenny Potter fifth.
After multiple attempts to get the IMCA Stock Cars underway, once they finally got some green flag laps, three contenders stood out. Aaron Sauter led the race early with both Blake Peeler and Tim Eaton close behind. The three looked as though they would settle it amongst themselves. Late in the race, contact between Eaton and Sauter would result in both falling out of contention, giving the lead to Peeler. Behind Peeler, new contenders found their way to the front to challenge on the late race restart. Carson Masoner made the move to second and gave Peeler a challenge on the last lap. Peeler hung on to win, with Carson Masoner second and his brother, Connor Masoner third. Austin Bouzek had a good first run of the year and edged Lance Dixon at the line for fourth.
In a caution filled IMCA Sport Mod feature, Chris Wright used a front-row starting position to hold the point. Every restart, Wright showed he had control of the field as he would quickly gap his competitors. The race went checkered close to the time limit and Wright still held the lead and made the trip to victory lane. Jeffrey Sears drove to a second-place finish, while Steven Clancy went plus 10 positions to finish third. Randy Smith Jr., and Ethan Isaacs rounded out the top five.
The E-Modifieds were also slowed by several cautions, but for much of the race Brandon Beam paced the field. It looked as though he was headed for the win, when a caution flew on the white flag lap. That would set up a green-white-checkered finish, but Beam wouldn’t be the one the lead the field to it. Under the yellow, Beam had issues and pulled his car pit side. That gave the lead to Gary Ainsworth and he led the final two circuits to pick up the win. Justin Asher would move up eight positions to finish second, with Buz Kaster third, Kyle Russell fourth and James Burns fifth.
A battle between brothers headlined the Pure Stock feature. Connor and Carson Masoner were running one-two in the closing laps. Carson had the faster car, but Connor held the lead in the late going. By the end of the race, Carson put the bumper to his brother off turn fourth. Both drivers were sideways at the line with Connor getting the win and Carson second. Tobin Bartlett finished third, with Tyler Starmer fourth and George Bruning fifth.
Up next for US 36 Raceway is a visit from the big names of the Lucas Oil ASCS National Sprint Car Series on Friday, April 26. IMCA Sport Mods and Pure Stocks are also on the card. Pits open at 3 p.m. for the event. The grandstands open at 5 p.m. Hotlaps are at 7 p.m. and racing starts at 8 p.m. Tickets for this event will be sold the night of the event and are $25 for adults, $8 for children 7-12 and 6 and younger are free.
