Greenwood, NE (April 5, 2014) –  After pushing back the start of the 2014 Lucas Oil MLRA season by one day, Saturday at I-80 Speedway it all began. There was a stout field of 43 competitors vying for the $3,000 winner’s check. Terry Phillips was second in passing points and rolled from the outside pole for the 35 lap main event. He was the class of the field in earning the season opening win.

“The car was real good, brand new car here,” said Phillips. “We’ve been working day and night on it. Usually new cars is temperamental. Mark Richards, he got us dialed in. I ain’t screwed a turn on it tonight, so that’s a good night. We got a new motor in it that Hatfield Engines built. It’s an animal.”

Weder earned the DirtOnDirt.com Pole Award and was a strong second. “Right when we got that first caution, I had had a run on him,” comented Weder. “I thought I might get him there in lapped traffic, but the caution played in his favor and not so much mine.” Weder was the dominant car during the heat race portion of the program. He drew a 7th place staring spot and won with relative ease, utilizing a line different than the majority of the field.

Brad Looney kicked off his 25th year behind the wheel with a 3rd place effort in his Capital Race Car. He had John Anderson and Brian Birkhofer breathing down his back for much of the race. Only two cautions slowed the pace of the main event.

Sunday action will get started at 5 PM. The Lucas Oil MLRA Late Models will be racing for $2,000 to win, and Phillips is in line for the Durst Motorplex bonus of $2,500 should he repeat Saturday’s performance.
