Possible equipment malfunction leads to fatal accident at Jacksonville Speedway

JACKSONVILLE, IL (June 29, 2024) – One person died and several others were reportedly injured in an accident during races Friday night at Jacksonville Speedway. Unofficial reports indicate one of the sprint cars in the race had an equipment malfunction and went into the infield. The remainder of races were canceled for the night. Morgan County Coroner Marcy Patterson said a 65-year-old man was in the infield when he was struck by a 410-winged sprint car that had lost control. He was pronounced dead at the scene, the coroner said. His name was not being released pending notification of family members.
The number of others injured and the extent of injuries was not immediately known.
The track was featuring 305 Sprints, Sportsman, Street Stocks and Micros classes.
The racing community responded quickly, offering prayers for those affected. “Our entire crew puts out our prayers to those involved and surrounding this situation at Jacksonville Speedway,” Will Armitage Racing said in a social media post.
Brandon Sheppard Racing, the site of the four-time World of Outlaw champion, said it was sending love and prayers “back home to Jacksonville Speedway.”
“As many of you are aware, there was an accident at the track tonight,” it said. “While many are wondering who, what, when, where and why, stop and just pray for those affected by this tragedy.”
The racing news site 357’s World of Dirt shared the news with its readers, drawing a flood of thoughts and prayers from race fans across the nation.
“We ask everyone to be respectful and send your prayers to those involved,” it said.
“Keep the prayers coming for all those involved,” Standridge Motorsports posted.
