Rockabilly Opener for CCSDS Bagged by Jack Sullivan
Little Rock, Arkansas (06/05/15) – Jack Sullivan returned to the track, where he began his racing career on Friday night, and came away with the $2,000 top prize in the opener for the 5th Annual Rockabilly weekend with the COMP Cams Super Dirt Series presented by Lucas Oil at I-30 Speedway (Little Rock, Arkansas).
Twenty-seven entries converged on the ¼ mile oval, and hometown driver Joseph Long earned the New Vision Graphics Pole Award for the 33 lap event after winning his heat race. He was joined on the front row by Allen Tippen.
Long grabbed the initial lead, but his stint at the front of the pack would be short-lived, when third starring, Jon Mitchell, shot to the top spot on lap 3 with a daring move exiting turn 4. As the field completed the fifth circuit Mitchell paced the event with Long and Tippen rounding out the top three spots. Behind the battle for the podium positions, great side-by-side battles waged throughout the field.
While Mitchell held the top spot, the driver on the move was Jack Sullivan, who overcame a wild four-wide battle for the runner-up spot at the race’s midway point. By lap 17 he began to challenge Mitchell for the lead. The duo swapped the top spot over the next few laps before the red flag flew on lap 21 for a multi-car pileup in turn 4.
At the time of the red flag Mitchell retained the lead with Sullivan, Tippen, BJ Robinson, and Patrik Daniel completing the top five in the running order.
Back underway Mitchell found himself being hounded by Sullivan. The Greenbrier, Arkansas took the lead for good on lap 24. Despite a pair of late-race cautions he drove away from the field for his second series win of the year, and twelfth of this career. A bobble late in the 33 lap affair found Mitchell slipping backwards a few spots. As a result Robinson, Jesse Stovall, Jon Mitchell, and Robert Baker made up the balance of the top five in the final rundown.
With their finishes Jack Sullivan, BJ Robinson, Jesse Stovall, and Jon Mitchell all lock into Saturday night’s finale with their starting spots being determined by the Allen Manufacturing Dash.
Joseph Long won GRT Race Cars Heat Race #1 with Allen Tipping winning Allen Manufacturing Heat Race #2. Jon Mitchell raced to victory in Henryetta Ford Heat Race #3, while Patrik Daniel won Woodco Inc. Heat Race #4.
The Boston’s Sports Bar and Restaurants B-Mains were topped by Clay Fisher and Kyle Beard
The Larry Shaw Race Cars Hard Charger Award went to Jesse Stovall for advancing from the 12th starting spot to a 3rd place finish, while Shannon Scott was the recipient of the Wilwood Tough Brake of the Race Award after being caught in multiple tangles throughout the course of the night.
Action continues at I-30 Speedway on Saturday evening. Saturday’s program will see the balance of the field competing in a complete program as they try to earn a starting spot in the 45 lap finale. The top four finishers from Friday’s program will compete in the Allen Manufacturing Dash, which will determine the starting order for the front two rows in the finale. A $600 total purse will be on the line for the dash. The evening will headlined by the Central Arkansas Pest Services Rockabilly 45, which posts a $3,000-to-win/$300-to-start purse. IMCA Modifieds, Bumper to Bumper Super Stocks, and 600cc Mini Sprints will be on the Saturday card as well.
