Sanders, Noll and Mercer Among Winners on Walker Dozing Night at I-35 Speedway
By: Jacob Blair
The Show-Me Vintage Racers were first to take to a smooth and slick racetrack at I-35 Speedway. Mickey Fleetheart would jump to an early lead, but Damon Clevenger never let him out of his grasps early in the race. As the laps wound down, Clevenger found speed on the top side of the racetrack. Clevenger worked his way around Fleetheart with a few laps to go and claimed the feature win. Fleetheart finished second, while Mike Johnson, Rocky Rhodes and Steve Hughs rounding out the top five.
The E-Modifieds provided some close battles all feature long. Early on, Emma Martin, Ben Stockton and Matt Dorssom battle hard for the second position, while Chris Mercer distanced himself as the leader. Eventually, Stockton prevailed for second and a timely caution helped close the gap to Mercer. On the ensuing restart, Mercer and Stockton battled side by side for several laps, but Mercer kept Stockton at bay long enough the win the E-Modified feature. Stockton finished second, as Justin Marrant, Dorssom, and Bobby Lopez made up the rest of the top five.
The Midwest Lightning Sprints made its first appearance for the 2018 season at I-35 Speedway and Bobby Layne found his way to the top step on the podium, claiming the feature win. Mike Trent finished second, Kyle Lewis third, Tyler Miller fourth and Greg Murray fifth.
The Grand Nationals were up next to tame the 3/8th mile oval of I-35 Speedway. Houston Johnson one upped his race from March 31 and picked up the feature win. John Hanson, Chad Fuller, Billie Hoover and John Winslow made up the top five.
The Sport Compacts put on one of the wildest shows of the night with constant two and three wide racing, while racing four wide on some occasions as well. Steven Bunton used a quick start to get away from the congestion and sailed to the feature win. From second on back positions swapped each lap. David Miller III prevailed from the high-speed traffic jam in second, while Devin Schmidt, Alvin Cooney and Dave Petty Jr. rounded out the top five.
The Pure Stocks battled all race long to stand on the top step of the podium. Jacob Grotewiel used a late race pass on the high side to work his way around race long leader Cletus Murray. Ron Hill followed Grotewiel on the high side and relegated Murray back to third. When the checkered flag flew, Grotewiel picked up the feature win, Ron Hill finished second, Cletus Murray third and Rylee Fuller rounded out the top four.
The USRA Stock Cars provided another side-by-side battle for the lead. Jeff Dixon jumped out to the early lead, but March 31 feature winner Gary Donaldson wanted to make it two-for-two. The two battled hard for first half of the feature, but by the time the checkered fell Donaldson picked up his second feature win on the season. Dixon finished second and Alvin Cooney rounded out the top three.
The USRA B-Modifieds had a difficult time keeping cars pointed in the right direction as green flag laps were hard to come by. Daniel Harris led most of the feature, but on a late race restart, he would have his hands full. Ed Noll, involved in one of the earlier cautions, recovered from the rear and took the opportunity to take the lead late. Ed Noll, who finished second on March 31, would do one better and pick up the feature win. Dustin Miller had a good run from a sixth starting position to finish second. Daniel Harris, Randy Ainsworth and Garrett Hill rounded out the top five.
The USRA Modifieds struggled with the slick track as well, as several cautions flew throughout the feature. Although, nothing fazed Zach Sanders as he led wire to wire and won the feature. Early challenger, Darren Shaw, ran second most of the race, but spun late allowing others a shot at Sanders. Chad Olsen made one last attempt on Sanders on the last restart, but Sanders proved too strong. Dennis Elliott recovered from an early left rear flat tire to finish third, while Tyler Grooms and Billie Hoover rounded out the top five.
