West Burlington, IA (Saturday, September 23, 2017) – One would have thought it was a mid summer night instead of early autumn on Saturday, September 23rd at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa, as temperatures hoovered around the low 90’s. The on track action was just a hot, as the weather on this season finale night was brought to you by Mepo Truck and Trailer Repair out of Mediaplois, Iowa. It was also the season championship event for the Shottenkirk.com Sprint Invaders and Crazy Coyote Mini Hauler Trucks.

The first feature to take to the track was the 15 lap Casebine Credit Union SportMods, with Randy LaMar and Brandon Setser drawing the front row. Setser would take advantage of his starting spot to jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Austen Becerra and LaMar. Becerra tried to look under Setser for the top spot over the next seven laps, but Setser was able to hold him off on each lap. That was until lap 9 when Setser drifted high coming off turn 4, which allowed Becerra to slip past for the lead. Setser would follow in Becerra’s tire tracks over the final 6 laps, but wasn’t able to get by in the caution free event. As Becerra went on to win his fourth in a row and ninth overall at 34 Raceway, and it was also his second win of the weekend after winning the $2,000 special on Friday night in Davenport, Iowa. Setser settled for 2nd, Adam Birck was 3rd, Brandon Lennox came from 12th to finish in 4th, with Andrew Burk rounding out the top 5.

Up next was the 20 lap Sunoco Fuel Mod Lites national event, with twenty-five of the twenty-six starters taking the green flag. Andy Sherley and Scott Naggatz would lead the field to that green, as a result of their one two place finish in the dash earlier in the night. Sherley took advantage of his starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over Naggatz and Ty Short. While the top two cars tried to pull away from the field, the action behind them went two and three wide at times. But that action up front was slowed for the first time on lap 4, when Wyatt Wilkerson, who who was running 6th, spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Sherley moved back out front, with Jason Masengarb, who started 6th, and Travis Stensland over taking Naggatz for second and third. Stensland was able to wrestle the runner up spot away from Masengarb on lap 8, and then went to work on Sherley for the top spot. Coming off turn 4 to complete lap 10 Stensland was able to slip under Sherley for the lead. But before the lap was scored complete the red flag came out, which gave Sherley the lead back for the restart. Jimmy Halcomb would go for a nasty ride in turn 4 to bring out the red. He would climb from his car okay.

The restart saw Stensland use the bottom of the track to grab the lead away from Sherley, with Masengarb and Mike Morrill, who started 11th, close behind. While Stensland set the pace out front, Sherley had to work to hold back Masengarb and Morrill for the second spot. On lap 15 Masengarb was able to get the second spot from Sherley, but going down the backstretch the following lap Masengarb pulled into the infield with mechanical troubles. This would give Morrill the second spot, as he took up the challenge of Stensland for the lead over the final 4 laps. But Stensland was able to hold him off to claim his first win of the season at the track, that was worth $500. Morrill was 2nd, Randy Bryan finished 3rd after starting in 9th, Sherley was 4th, with Michael Dominguez coming home in 5th.

Drake Fenton and Dylan Reverend led the field to green in the 12 lap Crazy Coyote Mini Hauler Truck feature, with Fenton jumping out front to lead lap 1 over Reverend and John Helenthal. Just as Fenton started to pull away from the rest of the field, the red flag appeared to slow him down. Reverend got upside down in turn 2 and collected Brian Tipps to bring out the red. He would climb from his truck okay. On the restart Fenton jumped back out front, with Tim Wagner and Helenthal close behind. Fenton would pull away late in the race to go on to score his fourth win of the season at 34 Raceway, which also helped his claim the track championship. Wagner was 2nd, Lance Applegarth was 3rd, Helenthal was 4th, with Lake Carlson finishing in 5th.

Up next was the 15 lap Pepsi Stock Car feature, with Jake Wenig and John Oliver Jr. drawing the front row. Oliver Jr. would take advantage of his starting spot to jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Wenig and Chad Krogmeier. As Oliver Jr. and Wenig started to pull away from the rest of the field, the battle for third was heating up between Krogmeier, Dean Kratzer and Dane Fenton. Disaster would strike that battle on lap 9 when Kratzer spun in turn 4 from contact from Fenton to bring out the yellow. On the restart the yellow light would come back on, as contact from Wenig sent Krogmeier spinning in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. The following restart saw Oliver Jr. jump back out front, with Fenton and Wenig coming from the back to follow close behind. Oliver Jr. would go on to lead the final five laps unchallenged to claim his sixth win of the season at the track. Fenton was 2nd, Wenig was 3rd, Krogmeier was 4th, with Kratzer completing the top 5.

The final feature to take to the track on the night was the 30 lap Shottenkirk.com Sprint Invaders, with Dave Getchell and Ryan Jamison making up the front row. But it was third place starter Josh Schneiderman who grabbed the lead on lap 1 over Jamison and Jon Agan. The action up front was slowed for the first time on lap 2, when Paul Nienheiser, who was running 4th, spun off the top of the track in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Schneiderman moved back out front, with Jamison and Agan close behind. One lap later, lap 4, Agan slipped past Jamison to take over the runner up spot and then went to work on Schneiderman for the top spot. But Disaster would strike Agan on lap 8, when he spun off the track in turn 2 to bring out the second yellow of the race. Once again Schneiderman jumped back out front on the restart, with Jamison and Cody Wehrle following. While Josh Schneiderman set the pace out front, all eyes were on Jarrod Schneiderman, who started 13th, and Nienhiser who were working their way towards the front. On lap 19 Jarrod Schneiderman slipped past Jamison for second, while Nienhiser was back up to 6th. But even with heavy lapped traffic there was no catching Josh Schneiderman, who went on to win his first Sprint Invaders feature of the season. Nienhiser came back to finish 3rd, Wehrle was 4th, with Jamison coming home in 5th. Agan, who recovered from his spin on lap 8 and finished 9th, would come away with the Sprint Invaders title.

Not only was this the final event of the 2017 season at 34 Raceway, it also brought an 11 year ownership of the track by Jeff and Amy Laue, Scott and Lorrie Parish, and Tom and Sue Bowling to an end. As Amy made the announcement to everyone in attendance on Saturday that the track has been sold to Brad Stevens. Brad is the master mind behind the “Slocum 50” race, which honors his great friend Benton Slocum. Who was killed in a pit accident at the track back in 2005. Stevens told the crowd that very little changes would be made for the 2018 season.
