Schriner Shines at QCS Points Opener
By Brad Hines
EAST MOLINE, IL (May 6, 2012) – Quad City Speedway kicked off the 2012 points season with six divisions of racing on Rock Island County Animal Shelter Night. A full grandstands and pits witnessed some of the best racing in the Midwest on a glass smooth track.
Rock Island’s Rick Schriner took full advantage of his pole position starting spot in the Extreme Auto Glass Street Stock feature and led every lap holding off a very strong Emily Gade. Ms. Gade gave Schriner everything he could handle, even pulling beside him several times, but Schriner would not be denied. T.J. Patz had a solid third place after starting the feature 18th. Nick Lawrence and Steve Gustaf Sr. rounded out the top five. Heat winners were Schriner and Ron Marks Jr.
The ever exciting Mod Lites made another appearance at QCS Sunday. Moline’s Shon Sanders wasted little time grabbing the lead, pulling away from the pack, and coming home with the victory. Johnathan Huston ran a strong second followed by Anthony Guss, Greg Rossell, and David Norton. Guss came from the eighth starting spot and Rossell came from the ninth starting spot. Heat winners were Rossell and Todd Cramer.
In the Orion Tire Repair IMCA Modifieds, veteran Modified driver, Doug Crampton jumped out to the early lead with Colona’s Jason Bahrs in hot pursuit in second. Crampton held off Bahrs for the first six laps but Bahrs then bolted by Crampton and went on to his first win in 2012. Crampton would finish second with Brandon Durbin, Greg Durbin, and Eric Barnes completing the top five. Heat winners were Bahrs and B. Durbin
Ryan Dolan once again stole the show, in the Verplaetse Excavating A-Modifieds, by starting dead last in the 20 lap feature and ending up parking his yellow and red #7 in victory lane. John Bull took the early lead but by lap 12 Dolan, using the bottom of the track, would take control of the lead and go onto win. Bull would finish second followed by Jerry Bailey Jr., Scott Fridley, and Dustin Schram. Heat winners were Bull and Dolan.
A stout, 18 car, Sexton Ford IMCA Late Model field took to the track for their 30 lap main event with a front row of the defending IMCA National Champion, Ray Guss Jr., and 2-time 2012 Deery Bros. winner, Mike Murphy Jr. QCS fans were treated to a very exciting feature with Guss and Murphy running side by side for several laps. Guss was running the bottom and Murphy was running the top. Murphy eventually took full control of the lead, began pulling away, and took the checkered flag. Guss finished second with Nate Beuseling, Rob Toland, and Mike Garland making up the top 5. Toland had an impressive run coming from 15th to finish 4th in his return to late model action. Heat winners were Todd Malmstrom, Guss, and Shawn Mulvany.
The Aaron’s Affordable Towing 4 Cylinders saw Mike Wisdom lead every lap holding off challenges from Jason Blocker, Brandon Jewell, Aaron Hitt, and Brandon Dahl. The top five was so close you could throw a blanket over them. Blocker would drop out of the race allowing Jewell to take second followed by Hitt, B. Dahl, and Wade Dahl. Heat winners were Hitt and B. Dahl.
The next race at the Quad City Speedway will be Sunday, May 13th. The Verplaetse Excavating A-Modified Big 8 Racing Series presented by Fikes Truck Line will be back on 13th along with the Sexton Ford IMCA Late Models, Extreme Auto Glass Street Stocks, Orion Tire Repair IMCA Modifieds, and the Aaron’s Affordable Towing 4 Cylinders.
