INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (Aug. 5) – After eight events, the Karl Performance Hawkeye Dirt Tour presented by XSAN has its first repeat winner.

In front of a capacity crowd, Darin Duffy reeled in familiar foe Troy Cordes on the 22nd of 30 laps and led to the finish of Monday’s IMCA Xtreme Motor Sports Modified main event at Independence Motor Speedway. The $1,000 victory put him on the ballot for the 2014 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational.

Cordes salvaged second despite the best efforts of Mike Van Genderen and series point leader Ronn Lauritzen was fourth. Tyler Droste completed the top five.

Justin O’Brien and Cordes shared the front row for the start, with Cordes going to the high side for the early lead. He gained some breathing room by lap five over O’Brien, who by that time had his hands full defending second against Van Genderen.

Van Genderen gained the position on lap eight, before a succession of three quick yellows. The ninth starting Duffy used the ensuing restarts to his advantage to take over second and began his pursuit of Cordes.

The race stayed green for the last 20 circuits and Duffy used different lines to make up ground on the leader.

He finally drew even on the 21st lap and made his pass to the front completing the next lap. Duffy stretched his advantage to as much as six car lengths, leaving Cordes, Van Genderen and Lauritzen to fight over second

That race was contested all the way to the end, with Cordes just edging Van Genderen for runner-up pay.

Darrell Lanigan was the World of Outlaws Late Model winner. Monday’s twinbill at Indee marked the first time the two series were part of the same program.

The best Modified drivers in the dirt racing world collide again when Hancock County Speedway’s Night of 1,000 Stars does double duty as the next Hawkeye Dirt Tour event this Thursday, Aug. 8.

The winner at Britt earns a minimum of $3,500, with another $2,500 in lap money and two $1,000 bonuses making for a possible $8,000 payday. Thursday’s main event pays a minimum of $300 to start.

On Friday, Hancock County’s inaugural Night of 10,000 Stars pays $7,000 to the IMCA Modified winner, with another $3,000 in potential bonuses.

The final series events of the season are Sept. 13 and 14 at Farley Speedway.

Duffy’s first HDT win this season came on June 11 at Cedar County Raceway in Tipton. He now shares the career tour wins lead of five with Richie Gustin.
