Shawn McDermott wins Ryan McDermott Memorial
DAVENPORT, Ia. (September 27, 2024) – Night one of Davenport Dirt Stars was certainly a memorable one.
Highlighting the evening was the Ryan McDermott Memorial for Fred’s Towing & Cantrell’s Towing 4-Cylinder stock cars. The competition was fierce with twenty-six cars racing forty-four laps with over $2,000 first place money on the line.
Shawn McDermott of Davenport made his family proud by winning the race named for his brother. Shawn dominated the field. After starting tenth, he quickly worked his way forward. Shawn used the high side to pass Derrick DeFord for the point. McDermott led the last thirty-seven laps of the feature to secure the win.
Second went to Josh Starr, who started twelfth. Jake Benischek, DeFord, and Mitch Bielenberg rounded out the top five.
Evan Miller was the man to beat in Outhouse and Storage to Go Container Rentals IMCA Late Model action. Evan led all but one lap of the main. Nick Marolf raced to a second place finish, but had nothing for the leader. Matt Ryan took third followed by Jesse Bodin and Jeremiah Hurst.
Matt Werner captured the win in Wangelin’s Auto IMCA Modified division. Werner led early and then swapped the lead a couple of times with Mark Schulte. Matt went back to the lead for good on lap nine and led the rest of the way to the checkers. Denny Eckrich came on late in the race to apply some pressure on Werner, but would settle for second. Ben Chapman finished third followed by Spencer Diercks and Eric Barnes in that order.
No surprise in the D&K Home Products IMCA SportMod feature. The win went to Logan Veloz. Veloz started sixth and was leading by the end of lap two. Tony Olson grabbed second with Jarrett Franzen finishing a distant third. Shaun Slaughter and Shane Paris completed the first five.
The first feature of the evening was the Koehler Electric Outlaw Street Stock main. It was a race with a crazy ending. In the final corner, Allen Provenzano made contact with leader Nick Hixson sending both spinning. The race stayed green with Jesse Owen and Tony VonDresky crossing the finish line side by side in a dead heat. Transponder scoring showed a gap of 0.000 seconds between the two drivers and the race was judged as a tie. First and second place monies were evenly divided between the two drivers. Jason Bahrs was credited with third. Landen Chrestensen and Donnie Louck were fourth and fifth respectively.
Jordan Miles was an easy winner in the Thiesen’s IMCA Hobby Stock feature. Kile Vohringer took second with Nick Proehl third.
IMCA Mod Lites were also on the card Friday. Blake Gonzales edged out Dan Keltner for the feature win. Mike Morrow took third with Jon Padilla fourth and Jason Masengarb fifth.
Night 2 of Davenport Dirt Stars is on tap for Saturday, September 28th at Davenport Speedway. Highlighting Saturday’s action is the IMCA Late Model class where the feature winner will earn $3,000. Saturday’s support classes are IMCA Modifieds paying $1,200-to-win, IMCA SportMods paying $500-to-win, Outlaw Street Stocks paying $750-to-win, IMCA Hobby Stocks paying $1,000-to-win, Mod Lite paying $250-to-win, and Sport Compacts paying $300-to-win.
