Shryock, Mueller, Carter, Griffiths, and Barnes Cap Off the 2015 Racing Season With Wins at” Shiverfest”
by Brian Neal
Donnellson, IA (Saturday, October 24, 2015) – With the annual running of “Shiverfest” on Saturday, October 24th this only meant one thing, that it was the final race of the 2015 season at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson, Iowa. Midwest Performance and Power, along with Corky’s Racing Products helped present the action that brought 162 cars out for the final race of the season in Iowa.
Taking to the track first was the 15 lap Coors Light Hobby Stock feature, with Jacob Keiser and Neal Miller making up the front row. Keiser would take advantage of his front row start to jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Miller and Dustin Griffiths, who started 8th. The action up front was slowed on lap 2 for the first and only time of the race, as Benji Clemons clipped a tire in turn 2 and rolled to bring out the red. He climbed from the car okay. On the restart Keiser moved back out front, with Griffiths and August Bach close behind. Griffiths tried to work under Keiser over the next 9 laps, when Keiser started to slow coming off turn 4 on lap 12. Which allowed Griffiths to slip under him to grab the top spot away. Coming to the white flag Griffiths would enter lapped traffic, which allowed Bach to close in on his back bumper. Then coming off turn 4 for the checkered Griffiths held off Bach at the line by half a car to pick up the win. Bach settled for 2nd, Justin Lichty was 3rd, Bill Bonnett started 7th and finished 4th, with Nick Ulin coming from 15th to round out the top 5.
Up next was the 22 lap Donnellson Tire and Service Stock Car feature, with John Oliver Jr. and Jeremy Pundt leading the field to the drop of the green flag. But just as the green flag was waved the caution light came on, as Michael Larsen slowed to a stop down the backstretch after dropping the drive shaft in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the restart John Oliver Jr. grabbed the lead on lap 1 over Brian Mahlstedt and Mike Hughes. While Oliver Jr. set a fast pace out front, Damon Murty, who started 7th, and Jeff Mueller, who started 9th, were working their way towards the front. The field was brought back to Oliver Jr.’s back bumper on lap 8, when a tire was clipped and pushed onto the track in turn 1 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Oliver Jr., Mueller and Murty raced three wide off turn 2, with Oliver Jr. holding the top spot coming off turn 4. The battle up front was slowed for the second and final time on lap 10, when Ray Raker spun in turn 3 to bring out the caution. Oliver Jr. once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Mueller, Hughes, Murty and David Brandies, who started 10th, racing two wide behind him. With Oliver Jr. using the bottom of the track, Mueller went to the middle of the track to try and get around Oliver Jr. for the top spot. Coming off turn 4 on lap 17, Mueller would use his groove to take over the lead. Mueller then held on over the final 5 laps to claim his fourth win of the season at the track. Oliver Jr. settled for 2nd, Hughes was 3rd, Cayden Carter came from 8th to finish in 4th, with Brandies coming home in 5th.
Kimberly Abbott and Josh Barnes, who was moved to the outside of the front row when Ryan Havel scratched, led the field to the green flag in the 15 lap Armstrong Tractors Sport Compact feature, with Abbott grabbing the lead on lap 1 over Jake Benischek, who started 5th, and Barnes. The action up front was slowed for the first and only time on lap 2, when Randy Magnuson and Bryerson Tharp stopped in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Barnes would slip under Abbott to grab the top spot away, with Benischek working on her for the runner up spot. Barnes wasn’t able to pull away from Abbott, as heavy lapped traffic in front of him on lap 13 allowed her to challenge him for the top spot. Despite several attempts by Abbott over the final 2 laps, Barnes was able to hold on to pick up his sixth win of the season at the track. Abbott settled for 2nd, Benischek was 3rd, Darin Smith started 7th and finished 4th, with Brandon Reu rounding out the top 5.
Up next was the 20 lap Shottenkirk of Ft. Madison SportMod feature, with Sean Wyett and Brandon Dale making up the front row. Just as the green flag was waved the caution light would come on, as Jacob Beal spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Wyett jumped out front to lead lap 1 over Tony Dunker, who started 6th, and Dale. While Wyett paced the field out front, Dale, Dunker, Brayton Carter, who started 5th, Trevor Fecht, who started 8th, and Dan Drury, who started 12th, raced two and three wide behind him. The action up front was slowed for the second time, as Kyle Anderson and Erick Knutsen collided in turn 2 on lap 13 to bring out the caution. Wyett once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Dunker and Carter close behind. Carter went to the top of the track to take the top spot away from Wyett on lap 15. Just after lap 15 was scored complete Austin Paul, who started 19th and was running 5th, got into the back of Fecht in turn 4 and collected Drury, who was running 7th, to bring out the yellow. On the restart Carter moved back out front, with Dunker and Wyett working to hold back Brandon Lennox, who started 13th. Debris down the front stretch on lap 17 would slow the battle up front. On the restart David McCalla got upside down in turn 1 and collected Kyle Olson and Dan Keltner to bring out the red. McCalla would climb from his car okay. On the restart Carter moved back out front and then held on over the final 3 laps to claim the win. Dunker was 2nd, Wyett held on for 3rd, Lennox was 4th, with Tony Olson coming home in 5th.
The final feature to take to the track was the 25 lap Budweiser Modifieds, with Cayden Carter and Tommy Elston leading the field to the drop of the green flag. But just as the green flag was waved the caution light would come on, as Shawn Ritter, Scott Simatovich, Ed Thomas, Kyle Brown and Andrew Schroeder collided in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Carter jumped out front to lead lap 1 over Elston and Kelly Shryock. Shryock would slip past Elston for the runner up spot on lap 4 and then went to work on Carter for the lead. When the final caution of the race appeared on lap 5. A tire was clipped in turn 4 and pushed onto the track to bring out the yellow. Once again Carter moved back out front on the restart, with Shryock and Bruce Hanford close behind. Shryock went to the top of the track to take the top spot away from Carter on lap 17. But Carter would stay glued to Shryock’s back bumper, as they entered lapped traffic on lap 17. The two would swap the lead back and forth in the corners, with Carter being scored as the leader on lap 21. But Shryock would use the lapped traffic to slip past Carter on lap 22 and then held him off over the final 3 laps to score his first win of the season at the track. Carter settled for 2nd, Hanford was 3rd, Carter VanDenBerg started 10th and finished 4th, with Jeff Waterman coming from 8th to finish in 5th.
