Steward takes the checkered on Sprint Mid Season Championship night
BURLINGTON, IA (JULY 14, 2012) – The extreme heat continues in southeast Iowa and so does the hot racing action at 34 Raceway. This week, July 14, saw mid season championship night for the W.T. Gabeline and Sons Trucking 305 Sprints as well as more point race action for the IMCA Late Models, Coors Silver Bullet IMCA Modifieds, Mike’s Auto Parts IMCA Stock Cars, Pepsi Hobby Stocks and the I-Wireless/Louisa Communications 4 Cylinders. Donnie Steward picked up his fifth 305 sprint feature win this season. Three drivers got their first wins of 2012 at 34 Raceway including Matt Strassheim (late models), Morning Sun; Chris Webb (stock cars), Biggsville, Il., and Billy Stanford (4 cylinders), Wapello. Dennis LaVeine, West Burlington raced to his second modified feature win and Matt Gavin, Kirkwood, Il., won his fourth hobby stock feature.
Coming up this week, Saturday, July 21 will be more point race action on W.T. Gabeline and Sons Trucking night for late models, modifieds, stock cars, 305 sprints, hobby stocks and 4 cylinders.
The Coors Silver Bullet IMCA Modifieds took to the track for the first feature of the night. Andy Krieger led the field around the circuit the first eleven laps of the twenty lap feature holding off Jeff Waterman and Dennis LaVeine. Following a caution on lap twelve, LaVeine made a move to the inside and passed Waterman and Krieger for the lead and went on to hold off Brandon Rothzen on the final lap for the win. Josh Foster holds a narrow two point lead over Scott Hogan in the point standings.
Sixteen Mike’s Auto Parts IMCA Stock Cars took to the track next with Chris Webb and Cale Samberg on the front row. Webb took the lead on the first lap and would pull away from the field to take the checkered flag by a large margin. In the stock car points battle Matt Greiner and John Oliver, Jr. are tied wit 354 points each followed by Brett Timmerman, with 349.
Wapello’s Billy Stanford picked up his first ever I-Wireless/Louisa Communications 4 Cylinder feature win topping the twelve car field. Stanford took the lead from Bryerson Tharp on lap eight of the twelve lap feature and went on to take the checkered flag by several car lengths. John Whalen leads the 4 cylinder points with 373 followed by Nick Wilkerson with 363.
After a red flag was brought out on the first lap of the W.T. Gabeline and Sons Trucking 305 Sprint Mid Season Championship feature for Harold Pohren, the green flag was thrown again with Justin Newberry taking the early lead. Newberry led the field for the first five laps before point leader Donnie Steward would make a pass on lap six for the lead. With Steward holding a commanding lead the battle for second was going on behind him between Newberry and Daniel Berquist with Berquist winning the battle to finish second. Steward leads the sprint points with 323 followed by Ryan Jamison with 307.
Morning Sun’s Matt Strassheim picked up his first 34 Raceway IMCA Late Model feature win Saturday night for the 2012 season. Strassheim took the lead from his front row start and quickly pulled away from the field taking the checkered flag with a five second lead over Tom Darbyshire. Nate Beuseling, Silvis, Il. leads the late model point race with 334 points followed by Todd Malmstrom with 316 and Strassheim with 315.
The Pepsi Hobby Stocks capped off the night with Matt Gavin, Kirkwood, Il. picking up his fourth feature win at 34 Raceway. Dane Fenton took the lead from Dugan Thye on lap two and led the field for the next thirteen laps of the fifteen lap feature. On the final lap of the fifteen lap feature, Gavin was challengeing Fenton. Racing bumper to bumper on the back stretch the two came out of turn four side by side. As they crossed the finish line Gavin would take the win by mere inches over Fenton who had run a good race. Gavin holds the lead in the hobby stock point standings with 393 points followed by Victor Hastings with 386.
