Stewart Makes It Three In A Row at the Lee County Speedway
by Brian Neal
Donnellson, IA (Friday, July 5, 2013) – Another beautiful night meant the Lee County Speedway was back in action, as it was Shottenkirk of Fort Madison Night at the races. At the end of the night Steve Stewart picked up his third Budweiser IMCA Modified feature in a row, while John Oliver Jr. won the Donnellson Tire IMCA Stock Car feature, Carter VanDenBerg was victorious in the Shottenkirk Parts Express IMCA SportMods, Jason See won his second straight Coor’s Light IMCA Hobby Stock feature, with Austen Becerra claiming his first Sunline Auto Parts feature of the season at the track.
The first feature up on the night was the 14 lap Sunline Auto Parts IMCA Sport Compacts, with Mike Hornung Jr. and Brandon Lambert on the front row for the event. But it was third place starter Austen Becerra who jumped out into the lead on lap 1 over Lambert and Skipp Dunker. The battle up front was slowed for the first and only time on lap 2, as Dunker slowed to a stop in turn 2. On the restart Becerra moved back out front, while Josh Barnes, who started 5th, and Kimberly Abbott, who started 8th, slipped past Lambert in the battle for second. Becerra continued to hold the top spot, while Barnes, Abbott and Brandon Reu, who started 9th, battled for the runner up spot. Abbott was able to clear Barnes on lap 11 for second and then set her sights on Becerra for the lead. But Becerra was able to hold her off over the final 3 laps to claim his first win of the season at the track. Abbott was 2nd, Barnes was 3rd, Reu was 4th, with Lambert holding on for 5th.
Up next was the 12 lap Coor’s Light IMCA Hobby Stock feature, with Mike Hornung Jr. electing to start on the tail putting Jason See and Andrew Hustead on the front row for the event. See would take advantage of his front row start to grab the lead on lap 1 over Hustead and Dane Blozovich. Hustead would try to get under See for the lead over the next 4 laps, before spinning his machine in turn 1 on lap 4 to bring out the only caution of the race. On the restart See moved back out front, with Blozovich close behind in second. See would go on to lead all 12 laps to pick up his second win in a row at the speedway. Blozovich held on for 2nd, Hustead recovered from his lap 4 spin to come back up to 3rd, Randy Byerly was 4th, with Ricky Miller Jr. rounding out the top 5.
Rodger Dresden and Dakota Simmons led the field to the drop of the green flag in the Shottenkirk Parts Express IMCA SportMod feature, with Dresden grabbing the lead on lap 1 over Phillip Cossel and Rick Barlow Jr. Cossel would slip under Dresden on lap 2 to take over the top spot, and then was slowed for the first caution of the event. Robert Gould would spin in turn 2 to bring out the yellow light. Under the caution second place runner Dresden would loose a left rear spring and had to take his car pit side. On the restart Cossell moved back out front, with Simmons over taking Barlow Jr. for second. While Cossel started to pull away from the field, Carter VanDenBerg, who started 7th, Bobby Anders, who started 6th, Brett Lowry, who started 7th, and Tony Dunker, who started 9th, were working there way towards the front. The only thing to slow Cossel down on the night was the second and final caution of the event on lap 13, as Simmons spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. As the caution came out Cossel’s machine came to a stop in turn 4 with troubles and was pushed into the pits. VanDenBerg would inherit the lead for the restart, with Dunker and Anders close behind. VanDenBerg, who was using the top of the track, worked to hold back Dunker, who was on the bottom, as the two ran side-by-side over the final 4 laps. Dunker would try a last lap attempt going into turn 3 to get the lead, but VanDenBerg was able to use the momentum off the top to edge him at the line for his third win of the season at the track. Dunker settled for 2nd, Lowry was 3rd, Anders was 4th, with Brandon Dale coming from 14th to round out the top 5. VanDenberg would also win the “King of the Hill” race against Anders.
Up next was the 18 lap Donnellson Tire IMCA Stock Car feature, with Les Blakley and Jim Lynch on the front row. Lynch would take advantage of his front row start to jump out into the lead on lap 1 over Jeremy Pundt and Jason Cook, who started 6th. The action up front was slowed for the first caution of the event on lap 3, as Wayne Landheer spun in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Lynch moved back out front, with Cook and Abe Huls, who started 7th, over taking Pundt for second and third. Cook used the bottom of the track to slip past Lynch on lap 5 and then held it until lap 7 when he lost a motor going into turn 3 to bring out the final caution of the event. Huls would inherit the lead for the restart, with Pundt working to hold back John Oliver Jr. for the second spot. Oliver Jr. was able to clear Pundt on lap 8 for second and then went to work on Huls for the lead. Huls, who was running up top, and Oliver Jr., who was using the bottom, ran laps 9 and 10 side-by-side, before Oliver Jr. was able to clear him for the top spot on lap 12. Oliver Jr. then held off Huls over the final 6 laps to pick up his second win of the season at the speedway. Huls was 2nd, Lynch was 3rd, Ray Raker was 4th, with Pundt coming home in 5th.
The final feature of the night was the 18 lap Budweiser IMCA Modifieds, with Levi Smith and Dennis LaVeine leading the field to the drop of the green. But two cautions before the completion of a lap would slow the action down. The first caution came out when Justin Hill spun in turn 1. That was followed up when Andy Krieger got sideways going into turn 1 and collected Hill to bring the yellow light back on. On the third restart LaVeine took advantage of his front row start to grab the lead on lap 1 over Smith and Mike VanGenderen, who started 8th. LaVeine then started to pull away from the field, as Steve Stewart, who started 5th, and VanGenderen battled for the second spot. Stewart was able to grab second on lap 3 and then went to work on cutting into LaVeine’s lead. Both Stewart and VanGenderen closed in on LaVeine on lap 12, with Stewart slipping under him on lap 13 to take over the top spot. VanGenderen was able to get by LaVeine on the next lap and then went to work on Stewart for the lead. Stewart was using the top side of the track in turns three and four, while VanGenderen tried using the bottom. Going into turn 3 on the final lap, VanGenderen would drive his machine hard into the turn in hopes of getting by Stewart. But Stewart used the top of the track to edge him at the line to claim his third win in a row at the track. VanGenderen settled for 2nd, Hunter Marriott came from 9th to finish in 3rd, LaVeine was 4th, with Tyler Cale rounding out the top 5.
