Toland scores late model win at Davenport

DAVENPORT, Ia. (June 16, 2017) – Points racing was tops on the agenda Friday at the Davenport Speedway. With just one week before Mid-Season, the racing, the temperature, and the tempers were all running a little hot.
Rob Toland dominated the Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Model feature. Toland took the lead from his son on lap four of the twenty-five lapper and never looked back.
Toland had built a sizeable lead when the caution flag flew. A three-car pile-up with three laps remaining scrambled the field. Chuck Hanna got a great restart and chased Toland to the checkered flag. Matt Ryan recovered from the caution to finish third. Mike Cothron and Andy Nezworski completed the top five.
Brad Montgomery scored a long-awaited win in the Eriksen Chevrolet IMCA Modified main. Montgomery started on the outside pole and led all twenty laps for the win. Bryce Garnhart and Doug Crampton put the pressure on Brad during the second half of the race. However they would finish second and third respectively. Bruce Hanford and Jason Pershy completed the first five.
Brandon Setser captured his second Koehler Electric Street Stock feature of the season. Eric Sanders used a front row starting spot to lead the first eight laps of the main. On a lap nine restart, Sanders got sandwiched by Nick Hixson and Brandon Setser, with Setser coming away with the lead. Brandon led the rest of the way to the checkers.
Cary Brown emerged from the pack to take second, with Jeff Struck Jr. third. Dwayne Smith Jr. finished fourth, just ahead of Jesse Owen.
The Hawkeye Auto IMCA SportMod feature started with a crash that involved half the field as the cars came to the green flag. All but one car was able to continue.
When the race resumed, Doug Burkhead jumped out to the early lead. On lap three, Jake Morris took over the lead. Jake would lead the remaining laps for his first win of the year. Tony Olson, who was in the first lap crash, came back to finish second. Doug Burkhead would finish third followed by Rance Powell and Jason Doyle.
Mid-Season Championships are next Friday, June 23rd, at the Davenport Speedway. All classes will use a draw/re-draw format.
