Trevor Drake Defends Burgess Memorial title At Springfield While Dalton Survives Yeoman Late Race
SPRINGFIELD, MO (June 30, 2012) – Despite Temps around 100 degrees, over 85 race teams checked into the “Quick-Quarter” for the 2nd Annual Rob Burgess Memorial present by Garfield’s Restaurant And Pub with the Casey’s General Stores Midwest Modz class being the featured class in a 20 lap $500 to win race.
The redraw placed one of the original Midwest Modz drivers Bobby Gough of Joplin and Drake on the front row as the green dropped. Quickly Drake took to the top side while Gough stayed down low as the drivers were pacing the early stages of the feature with side by side action. While Drake was pulling away, the pace began to quicken. This growing Modified class were keeping the fans in check as spots were being swapped back and forth as opening nigh winner Rusty Forrest, Taylor Moore, Dakota Maggard and others were coming forward. The 1st caution flew on lap 12 as Shawn Eggeman and Mike Cooper made contact with both spinning around. With Drake’s big advantage now gone, he would find Forrest and Maggard on his bumper for the restart. Forrest picked the high lane for the restart as second year driver Michael Page was perhaps the fastest car on the track clicking away positions. Drake would try to pull from Forrest, but Rusty kept glued to his bumper as Maggard was looking downstairs. Caution waved on lap 14 as Page’s great race ended as the motor let go sending him off turn 3 and again bunching the field together. Drake again would find Forrest right on his bumper during the green flag runs as Maggard kept to the low side while Nathan Gold, Moore, Matthew Thulin and a fast moving Shawn Eggeman picking his way from the earlier incident. With 2 laps left, Forrest looked inside of Drake several times, but couldn’t make the pass stick as Drake took back the special bowling ball trophy of Burgess to the shop with Forrest, Moore, Thulin and McGregor completing the top 5 with 14 cars completing the lead lap.
Current Budweiser USRA Modified point leader Jackie Dalton found the redraw to his advantage early as Dalton and Rob Muilenburg brought the field to the green flag. Dalton shot from the pole spot as the Carthage driver currently second in the USRA National Modified point standings pulled away from the veteran Muilenburg. Dalton had pulled away to a full straightaway advantage as John Yeoman moved around Muilenburg on lap 3 to take over second place. With the race going caution free, drivers were told the halfway mark as then Yeoman began his charge to the front as Muilenburg had Danny DeMasters II and points runner up Mitch Keeter were swapping positions. On lap 15, Yeoman really closed up the ground on Dalton as Keeter was also coming quickly to the front runners. Yeoman had caught Dalton on lap 16 as the duo kept fans wondering the outcome. Keeter used the bottom groove to his advantage and was making up ground while Muilenburg found Jerry Lankton and DeMasters coming quickly. As the white flag flew, Yeoman looking several times to the inside of Dalton while Keeter was also in the mix. Heading to the checkered, Dalton would hold back the veteran engine builder Yeoman to take his Doug’s Pro Lube/Garrison Performance/Hoffman to win number 3 with Yeoman’s 25th Anniversary Engines/Dy-Na-Tech/Hoffman, Keeter with his Mid-America Rebuilders/Yeoman Engines/TRE, Lankton in the Lankton’s Welding/Yeoman Engines/Hoffman and DeMasters in his DeMasters Racing completed the top 5. Muilenburg slowed on the final lap falling to a 7th place finish for the veteran currently 4th in the USRA National Standings.
In the Reliable Chevrolet/GM Performance Parts USRA B Modifieds, Jon Yeoman Jr. snapped a 2 year drought by taking the lead from early Kaleb Copher on lap 4 and then holding off stiff charges from current track and National point leader Scott Drake in taking his first of the season. Copher, the former Midwest Modz track champion grabbed the opening lead from Blake Ellis only to see a restart as Michael Maggard went around after contact with Drake. Both drivers went to the rear of the field as Copher again took command early with Blake, Jeremy Thulin and Yeoman in tow. Yeoman who won the first ever Reliable Chevrolet $500 to win event at Springfield made a smooth move around Copher on lap 4 as Jared Thulin, a fast moving Ryan Stacye and a hard charging Drake were in the top 5. With Yeoman pulling away, Drake moved around Thulin on the lap 10 mark and began to close up the ground. As the feature stayed green and clean, Drake would tuck behind the leader Yeoman by lap 14 and applied pressure with a great battle behind as the Thulin cousins Jared and Jeremy were holding off defending champion Bobby Maggard Jr for the spot. Drake would use every move possible in trying to overtake Yeoman Jr as the battle of Spec and GM 602 Performance motors were showing the best they had. Drake would diamond the track as Yeoman kept glued to the top side as the final lap went in the books. Drake would tuck behind Yeoman and then look inside, but tonight Yeoman held a solid line to grab the win with Drake, Rookie Jeremy Thulin, Maggard Jr and Jared Thulin in the top 5 as 13 of the 16 starters completed the lead lap.
Wheeler Metals Legends really set the tone for last lap moves tonight as Wayne Johnston found the top groove to his advantage as he overtook current point leader Justin Comer on lap 17 to capture the win. Park Jones took the opening lead with another night of 3 wide racing following. Justin Comer who has turned his luck around this season after a tough 2011 quietly came from back in row 4 to grab the lead from Jones after front runner Jay Reynolds brought out the yellow by going around in turn 1. The always exciting Legends show Springfield fans how starts and restarts are done as Jones saw Comer right to his inside as Johnston was trying to make the high groove work early. With Comer taking the lead over Jones, Billy Cottrill was trying to find a fast lane around and began to follow Johnston top side. Reynolds was making up alot of ground and was becoming a player in the outcome. A final yellow waved with 4 laps to go with Comer in control and Johnston getting the top side on the double- file restart. Johnston had Cottrell going upstairs with him as even though it was longer upstairs, Johnston was carrying the speed. Comer kept Jones at bay in the middle, But Johnston pulled off the winning pass in turn 2 while Comer, Jones, a fast moving Reynolds and Matt Gruenberg completed the top 5 runners.
Defending Pepsi Pure Stock point champion Jack Hamer of Ava returned to the winners circle after helping his father celebrate his 80th birthday last Saturday Night in Indiana. Hamer played the patient game as a wild 12 lapper saw early contenders Brett Testerman,Josh Bell, and Tyler Thulin get together on the opening lap. John Gamble went to the lead as Hamer quietly stayed close to the leader. With laps ticking off, Hammer made his winning move to capture win number 4 and get back into the Transport Graphics Championship Chase. Gamble recorded a solid runner-up spot as Philip Schloesser, Bell and Danny vasquz completed the top 5 runners. Mitch Hemphill had a good run end with problems around mid race.
Rex Sawyer recovered from an opening lap spin and charged back into his second win of the season in the Williams Lawn Care And Restoration Street Stock feature. The race featured 3 different leaders as the top 6 were all together. Kim Kaasa in the beautiful historic 124 car took the opening lead with Wayne Bysor right on his bumper. Sawyer went around on the opening lap and restarted 8th. On the restart, Kaasa again held off Bysor as points runner-up Morris and Shawn Schmidt fought for spots. On lap 5, Bysor made the move to the lead as Kaasa would find Sawyer on his bumper. Bysor kept the top spot until Sawyer got a great drive upstairs off turn 2 to grab the lead on lap 9. Shawn Schmidt then moved around to give Sawyer a battle as they finished 1-2 with Bysor, Kaasa, and point leader Jim Reid following.
A new winner in the Kids Young Lions class as ever improving Graysn Cox showed alot of patience and picked his spot to grab his first ever feature win. Kylan Garner grabbed the opening lead and then gave way to point leader Wesley Smith. A lap 5 yellow for Ty McWhirter would see leader Smith head to the pits as Garner was back in front. During the green run, Cox kept move around on the track as Garner stayed in the middle lane. On lap 10 of the 12 lap feature, Cox made a very smooth pass upstairs and held off Garner for his first win of the season. Garner and McWhirter followed.
