United States Modified Touring Series Invades I-35 Speedway
WINSTON, Mo. (August 8, 2013) – Stormy Scott was in the right place at the right time to take down the feature win Thursday night as the United States Modified Touring Series blasted into the I-35 Speedway for the second race in the Hunt for the USMTS Casey’s Cup. Riding third at the white flag, Scott entered the first turn tucked in closely behind Jeremy Payne and race-long leader Jason Hughes when the 2010 USMTS National Champion spun on the final lap.
As per USMTS rules, the car that brings about the caution flag and any others which make contact or cause the incident, must restart at the tail of the field. Officials determined that contact from Payne initiated Hughes’ spin, so both drivers had to start at the back of the pack for the green-white-checkered finish.
Scott was able to withstand pressure from Rodney Sanders over the final two orbits to score the victory and pocket $5,000 for his effort. Pole sitter Chris Brown finished a close third, with Lucas Schott passing a dozen drivers en route to a fourth-place finish and the Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award.
Nine-time USMTS National Champion Kelly Shryock came from 11th on the starting grid to take fifth. Johnny Scott, Austin Siebert, Daniel Hilsabeck, Dereck Ramirez and Trevor Hunt rounded out the top 10. Hughes came back for an 11th-place finish. Payne headed to the pits before the final restart.
The win was Stormy Scott’s 17 of his career, breaking a tie with Payne and tying him with Sanders on the USMTS all-time wins list. His victory also propelled him to the top of the point’s standings where he now holds a 14-point advantage over his twin brother, Johnny.
Shryock moved up to third in the rankings while Hughes fell to fourth. Sanders is fifth, followed by Zack VanderBeek, Brown, Hunt, Payne and Schott in the top 10.
Also on tap for the great night of racing at I-35 Speedway were the exciting USRA Iron Man B-Mods. Early race action witnessed heat race winner Tony Manley #3x from Osborn, MO take the lead but fade in the later stages as Chase Austin #111 from Eldora, Kansas would find the front and hold off all challengers to pick up the feature win. Fourteen year old Shadren Turner #17 from St. Joseph, MO would battle his way to second place backing up his heat race win earlier in the evening as Troy Hovey #476 from Castalia, IA would have to settle for third. The two Chads would battle for fourth and fifth as Chad Feather #11c out of Kearney, MO would finish fourth and Chad Clancy #21c from Smithville, MO coming home fifth. Other heat race winners included Royce Stanley #57s from Kansas City, MO. and Jake Richards #4j out of Edwardsville, KS. B-Feature winners were Nic Hanes #9h from Trenton Mo. and Ryan Fullenkamp #10r of Bloomfield, IA.
The most exciting and competitive racing of the night featured the USRA Stock Cars as Winston Missouri’s Jake Cameron #86c would lead all but the last two feet of the feature. Steve Jackson #2j, from Polk City IA, would use the high line off turn four to edge Cameron at the line to pick up the feature win, moving Cameron to second. Mitch Hovden #15 of Decorah IA would back up his heat race win with a solid third place finish, as Tom Schmitt #18 from Independence IA would end the night fourth. Derrick Agee #14 of Moberly MO would back up a heat race win to round out the top five in the feature.
