USMTS go at Liberal bountiful for Payne
LIBERAL, Kan. (June 21) – Jeremy Payne continued his dominance in the Arbor Masters Central Region presented by Day Motor Sports Friday night at the Liberal Fairgrounds Speedway with his fourth win in nine starts as the USMTS Casey’s Cup Series paid their first-ever visit to the 3/8-mile D-shaped clay oval.
A runner-up finish in Beyea Custom Headers Heat Race #1 earned the 27-year-old from Springfield, Mo., a spot in the redraw where he picked the pole position for the 40-lap main event.
From there, he led every lap to secure his 15th career USMTS victory and his second $4,000 paycheck in as many nights.
Dereck Ramirez of Woodward, Okla., ran in the runner-up spot from start to finish, but was unable to challenge Payne for the lead and crossed the finish line 4.449 seconds behind the winner.
New Sharon, Iowa’s Zack VanderBeek came from 11 on the 24-car starting grid to finish third and garnered his third Mesilla Valley Transportation Hard Charger Award of the 2013 campaign.
Rodney Sanders of Happy, Texas, was started and finished fourth while Johnny Scott of Las Cruces, N.M., netted the fifth spot.
Jason Hughes, Kelly Shryock, Thomas Tillison Jr., George White and Rookie of the Year points leader Trevor Hunt rounded out the top 10 finishers.
Payne has a semi-comfortable points lead in the Arbor Masters Central Region as he holds a 64-point cushion over Hughes with three events remaining. The final three events will take place Tuesday, July 16, at the Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., and Friday-Saturday, July 19-20, at the I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., during the 3rd Annual Silver Dollar Nationals.
The USMTS Modifieds now head to the Route 66 Motor Speedway in Amarillo, Texas, for the first of six events in seven days that will decide the champion of the Allgayer, Inc., Southern Region presented by Day Motor Sports.
Saturday’s show will be the only appearance of the season at the Route 66 Motor Speedway where current regional points leader Rodney Sanders cut his teeth in racing.
To the crowd’s delight, Sanders emerged as the winner of the inaugural USMTS event here in 2010 while Kelly Shryock held off Ryan Gustin to win in 2011. Two events here held at the state-of-the-art facility in 2012 with Jason Hughes and Randy Timms getting to the winners circle.
The racing surface at Bill Worthen’s 18-year-old speedplant is a generous 75 feet wide in the turns with 20 degrees of banking and 65 feet wide down the straight-aways with 5 degrees of banking. The facility has a seating for 4,000 race fans, and the race teams will enjoy concrete pads available with lighting and water.
Gates open at 6:00 and races start at 7:00. Tickets are $15 and kids under 6 are free. Support classes include Sport Mods, Street Stocks and Cyclones for the 4th Annual Amarillo Ambush presented by Bud Light.
The Route 66 Motor Speedway is a 3/8-mile high-banked clay oval located 1.5 miles south of I-40 at Exit 75 on Lakeside Dr. in Amarillo, Texas. For more information, call the track office at 806-383-0375 or 806-335-3478 for race day updates. The track’s website is www.route66motorspeedway.com.
The 4s Motorsports Southern Speedweek powered by Lecolift will continue on Sunday, June 23, at the Elk City Speedway in Elk City, Okla., before the first ever visit to the Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, on Tuesday, June 25. On Wednesday, June 26, it’s on to the Heart O’ Texas Speedway near Waco, then back to the north for three nights to finish up on Thursday-Saturday, June 27-29, with repeat visits to the Kennedale (Texas) Speedway Park; RPM Speedway in Crandall, Texas; and Southern Oklahoma Speedway in Ardmore, Okla.
