410 World of Outlaws Winner___IMG_9268

by Bill Wright

Knoxville, IA, June 14, 2014 – In the World of Outlaws only tune-up for August’s Knoxville Nationals, Brad Sweet drove Kasey Kahne’s #49 to victory at the Knoxville Raceway on Saturday night.  The victory was the first in 410 competition at Knoxville for Sweet, who won the 2008 Knoxville Midget Nationals.  Justin Henderson earned his first feature win of the year in the 360 class.

Sweet earned the pole position for the 25-lap WoO feature event by virtue of winning the Dash.  He shot out to an early lead in the non-stop event over Danny Lasoski and Shane Stewart.  Knoxville Raceway point leader, Terry McCarl, surged into contention, passing Stewart for third on lap two.  The two drivers would swap the spot three times, before McCarl gained it for good on lap five.

Sweet entered lapped traffic on lap eight.  Lasoski made a brief bid for the lead, before McCarl shot underneath him in turn two for the runner-up spot on lap fourteen.  Stewart followed suit and tracked down McCarl, who was caught behind a lapped car with two to go.

Sweet raced to a three-second advantage and finished over a straightaway ahead of McCarl at the checkers.  Stewart was third, ahead of Daryn Pittman and Kerry Madsen.  Lasoski, Paul McMahan, Ian Madsen, hard-charger Brian Brown (from 23rd) and Craig Dollansky rounded out the top ten.  World of Outlaws regulars comprised just four of the top ten slots.

RJ Johnson flipped in time trials after breaking his rear axle.  He was done for the night, but uninjured.  Jason Sides and Dollansky were involved in a heat race incident.  Neither was injured.  Ian Madsen hit the wall in his heat race.  All three made the call for the B main.

Stewart set quick time, while Lynton Jeffrey, McMahan, Clint Garner and McCarl were heat race winners.  Brooke Tatnell won the C main, and Kerry Madsen took the B.

“It feels good,” said Sweet in Victory Lane.  “I’ve always wanted to win at Knoxville.  I won here in a midget, but it means something to beat these guys.  There were 48 strong cars here tonight.  We’ve been strong, but we’ve slumped a little bit.  It’s good to be back in Victory Lane, especially here at Knoxville.  We work really hard to be good at this racetrack.  We had an awesome car.  I could move around all over the place.  I think I ran the top too long, but I felt I could run all over.”

“I got going there, and I thought we may have a shot at Brad,” said McCarl.  “We were good on the bottom, and he was running the middle.  He’s a pretty smart driver.  We needed to get to him before he found it.  We got to a couple of lapped cars, and one of them thought he was racing for second.  We got slowed down a little bit, and Brad got a little bit away from us.”

“I honestly made way too many mistakes,” said the third place Stewart.  “Terry found the rubber before I did and I probably should have moved down a little earlier.  I thought I had a shot at him on the last lap, but I missed it in one and two.  That killed my momentum.  Obviously, this is a good finish.  It’s hard to win here, and hard to finish on the podium.  Anytime that we can do that for our guys is special.”

Finishing fourth in his heat race was the only thing keeping Justin Henderson from sweeping the night’s 360 action.  He registered quick time of the night, before storming from eighth to win the main event, the second in a 360 here.

Rookie Dylan Peterson shot out to the early lead in the non-stop 15-lap feature ahead of Jamie Ball and Jon Agan.  Agan shot under the top two runners on lap three and took the point.  Four laps later, Henderson duplicated the move by a dueling Ball and Peterson for the second spot.

On lap eight, Henderson hit the high side to drive around Agan to take the lead for good in the BDS Motorsports #1.  Agan finished second, ahead of Joe Beaver, Russ Hall, who drove from 18th to fourth and Jonathan Cornell.  Peterson, Matt Moro, Ball, Matt Juhl and Josh Higday rounded out the top ten.

Moro, Jarrod Schneiderman and Tony Shilling won heat races.  In a bizarre incident, Tyler Brooks had his throttle stick while staging for the feature.  He flipped wildly on the frontstretch, but was uninjured.

“That was pretty crazy,” said Henderson in Victory Lane.  “There were chunks flying everywhere.  I’m glad the race went the way it did.  It kept going, and there really wasn’t time to regroup.  It was a lot of fun.  There were cars everywhere.  At the end, it was pick your moment and stick with it if it was working.”
