Wakeeney Speedway hosts fair race
By Mike Hughes
WAKEENEY, KS (July 31)—Wakeeney (KS) Speedway held a special racing program during the Trego county fair on Wednesday evening, July 31. IMCA-sanctioned Modifieds, Stock Cars and Northern Sports competed with added purse money on the line.
Mike Petersilie, who won Friday night at Thunderhill Speedway in Mayetta, jumped out to the lead at the drop of the green in the Modified A-feature. After a lap 3 caution, second running Jeremy Frenier of Fort Morgan, CO, took a lead he would hold to the checkers for a trip to the Jason Oil Winner’s Circle and a $1,000 payday. Petersilie gave chase but had to settle for second, followed by Brendon Gemmill, Jesse Richter and Troy Plummer. Heat race winners were ‘The Ragin Cajun’ Jeff Walters, Plummer, and Troy Gemmill, while ‘Dynamite’ Dylan Sherfick took top honors in the B-feature.
In the Stock Car feature, B.J. Wagoner took the early lead, only to be passed by track point leader Jeff Tubbs of Colby on lap 4. A couple of cautions kept the field close, then the final caution waved on lap 19 when Nick Tubbs went off the track to set up a green-white-checkered finish. Jason Rogers tried his best to get past Jeff Tubbs but could not and had to settle for the runner-up spot. Wagoner finished third, trailed by Eric Kinderknecht and Kyle Clough. Jeff Tubbs and Josh ‘The Hammer’ Hudson won the two heat races.
The Sport Mod feature saw its share of cautions, enough the race ended 2 laps early due to the time limit. Heat one winner Brenden Damon took the lead on the opening lap, but gave way to polesitter Cory Struckhoff of Kensington a short time later. With the cautions, the field stayed close but Struckhoff was up to the challenge to win and claim a $500 paycheck. Heat two winner Blaine Walt finished second, followed by Damon, Daniel Gottschalk, and third heat victor Ben Kates of Boone, IA.
Racing action returns to Wakeeney Speedway on Sunday, August 11, in a make-up event. The IMCA Sport Compacts will return to join the 4 regular divisions. The green flag will fly at 6:30 p.m.
