Weather postpones Sprint Invaders; practice canceled, car show still on

 

 

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa – The first-ever appearance of the Brockway Mechanical and Roofing Sprint Invaders Series at Independence Motor Speedway will have to wait a few weeks.

Cold and wet conditions, combined with an unfavorable forcecast, have forced officials to postpone the event. Originally scheduled for Friday, April 19, the 360 Sprint series has been rescheduled for Friday, May 24. Modifieds and SportMods will also be a part of the rescheduled Open Wheel Shootout to kick off Memorial Day weekend at the speedway. Those two divisions will run weekly track rules, however will not be sanctioned, meaning IMCA and track points will not be awarded. 

The practice session scheduled for Saturday, April 20, has also been canceled. 

The car show, scheduled to be held on the streets of downtown Independence the morning of April 20, will go on as planned. Driver registration will begin at 9 a.m. with the car show held from 10 a.m. until noon. Downtown areas that will be restricted to race cars and foot traffic include 1st St. East from 2nd Ave. NE to 3rd Ave. NE, along with 3rd Ave. NE from 1st St. East to 2nd St. NE. 

At around noon, awards will be presented to three drivers – Best of Show (as voted by a panel of judges), Fan Favorite (as voted by fans in attendance) and Most Unique Graphics (as voted by fans in attendance). 

Drivers who display their race cars for the duration of the car show will be given one free pit pass for the season opener on April 27 if they compete on opening night. 

Following the awards, a parade of car show entrants will make its way through the streets of Independence to the fairgrounds. Despite the cancellation of the test and tune session, city officials require race car haulers to be parked at the fairgrounds. They will not be permitted to remain downtown during the car show.
